This guide will be used to help you with the installation and wiring of a new/replacement drive/brush motor. It is important to note that any electrical work be performed by someone comfortable and qualified to work with electricity and knows the dangers that can come with doing so.
Note: This guide cannot be used for a blower motor replacement.
Tools Needed:
- 9/16” Wrench / Cresent wrench
- Medium sized Phillips head screwdriver
- Isolate power to your unit, the safest and best method of doing so is by unplugging the 120v 3 prong plug from the outlet.
- Using your 9/16” wrench or a crescent wrench, loosen the bolts that attach the black gearbox to the motor. It is recommended that you do not remove the bolts completely but instead loosen the bolts until they are finger loose. Finish removing the bolts by hand while supporting the bottom of the motor as to not let it drop.
- Located on the bottom of the motor will be the motor peckerhead. Use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove all but one screw to allow the cover of the peckerhead to swing out.
- Loosen the screw holding your ground wire, this wire will likely be green in color. Once removed, move the wire off to the side so it will not get in the way of the other wires.
- Remove the rest of the wires coming out of the wire harness (black, green, and red wires). These wires are connected via a spade/terminal connection and are best removed by holding onto the male spade with your thumb on one side and index finger on the other. Proceed to slightly wiggle and pull straight up on the male spade that is attached to the wire.
- Loosen the wire clamp found on the end of the elbow that is not currently treaded into the motor. This will make it so your wires don’t spin in circles as we unscrew the elbow. Unscrew the black elbow connector that’s threaded into the motor. Carefully pull the 4 wires that lie within the wire harness, out of the hole.
- Like we did in step 3, open the peckerhead of the new motor, Remove the black plastic cover on the side of the peckerhead and screw the elbow connector into it. Tighten down the wire clamp once finished. Be careful as to not damage any of the 4 wires that lie within the wire harness.
- When wiring up the new motor be careful as to not damage the din connectors attached to each wire. Grasp the connector with your thumb on one side and your index finger on the other and slide the male spade connector straight down on the terminal block.
- Your white wire will go on terminal block 4 parallel to yellow wire T3.
- Your black wire will go on terminal block 2 parallel to yellow wire T2.
- Your red wire will go on terminal block 1 parallel to yellow wire T1.
- As we did in step 4, loosen the green ground screw so you can slide the ground wire underneath the screw. Once seated, tighten the ground screw down.
- Install the new keyway and insert the motor into the gearbox. Tighten the bolts down to secure the motor to the gearbox.
- After your motor is installed, plug your mat washer back in and test the functionality of your unit. To easily determine what direction the brush is spinning, look at the shaft of the brush. Normal operating mode should spin the shaft counterclockwise. When pressing the reverse button on the back of the unit, the shaft should spin clockwise.
